Because the bolt has become so loose, it is losing more oil than it was before I tried to tighten it. and the last person probably put it on with a torque wrench. I have no plans on putting the engine and oil pan skid back on for my road trip to Boston next week. Quite frankly, there is not a good fix for this besides replacing the oil pan. the new pan bolt has a shoulder on it right? (built in washer) take a ratchet and a socket that fits shove the pan bolt into the hole and apply serious pressure with your palm to the head of the ratchet like your trying to shove a cork back in a wine bottle keep it straight. Sure, no one will ever see them except you, but every time you're under there you can bask in the glory that was a job well done. Now I'm scared that the bolt extractor won't work (they never seem to for me) or that I wont be able to do anything other than drill it and retap. Used Fumoto valve to replace stripped oil plug/pan. If he retapped your pan threads, then depending on the quality of the tap job, it should last. In your case, you could probably coat the bolt threads with RTV and just stick it back in the stripped hole. Or, get a rubber expandible plug. I either weld up the hole and drill and tap it of go to another size up either American drain plug or metric. Stripped mine while out of the country doing a hasty oil change before getting on the road one morning. As VT said stuff vibrates loose on these things, I've had bolts which where installed to the proper torque come loose and fall out while on a trip. Stripped Threads In Aluminum Oil Pan I cleaned everything up and tried screwing the plug back in but it would not tighten and I could feel it pulling more threads. you know how dificult they are to get out. We see it all the time at work. Remove the special bolt that holds the oil filter in place. Choose a thinner bolt that slides through the threaded hole. Just pick up a new pan and gaskets.
